Meet the Team

The College of Biological Sciences Student Board is divided into six committees, each with a focus on the cardinal issues of CBS: the Student Equity and Justice Committee, the Engagement Committee, the Mental Health and Outreach Committee, the Research Committee, and the Transitions Committee.

Social Liberation & Belonging

The Social Liberation & Belonging Committee focuses on making CBS,  and the University of Minnesota, community more educated and cognizant of social injustices. The purpose of the Social Liberation & Belonging Committee is to redefine and acknowledge the meaning/practice of equity, inclusivity, and liberation. We advocate for students of marginalized backgrounds by having thorough conversations with faculty, outside resources, and people in power– aiming for accountability and progress towards promoting inclusion of these topics in our curriculum, classroom operations, and general campus. The Social Liberation & Belonging Committee will be hosting a series of open discussions featuring diverse and distinguished speakers to inform and better the student body while documenting the lived experiences of these communities between academia and social issues

Mental Health and Wellness

The Mental Health and Wellness Committee creates and promotes resources ensuring CBS students are given the tools to support their well-being and balanced mental health. Additionally, we focus on creating healthy conversations surrounding mental health to destigmatize receiving help. We  work on planning events and spreading resources to support the mental and physical safety of CBS students.

Student Engagement

The Engagement Committee bridges the gap between CBS undergraduate students, faculty, and administrators through hosting events such as the semesterly Town Hall and spring Golden Pipettes event. By focusing on creating opportunities and space for collaboration, we aim to gather the first-hand experiences of students and faculty. This feedback is then used to improve the CBS community in a way that best reflects the needs of the college.

Research

The Research Committee aims to identify and promote research opportunities while developing an equitable pathway for all students to participate in the research process. We hope to accomplish this by increasing visibility, removing barriers, and educating students about the research process. Outreach

The Outreach Committee supports the connection between the  CBS and greater Minneapolis-St. Paul communities. We aim to facilitate youth interest in the sciences and  expand accessibility to - careers in the life sciences . One initiative of the Outreach Committee is STEM Day, which invites high school students in Minneapolis to visit the University of Minnesota campus to take part in engaging activities and learn about undergraduate science studies and research. The committee’s newest addition is a mentorship program  connecting local high schoolers with CBS student mentors to  clarify the achievability of an education and career  in the life sciences.
